Dinner at Donovan’s
Jack & Laura, long married and north of sixty, decide they need to make new friends since their pool of longtime “couple friends” is dwindling. They embark on a misguided series of dinners with potential new couple-candidates, with each over-the-top couple played by the same two actors. The play ends with a bittersweet acknowledgment of the realities of time’s passage, and Jack’s and Laura’s acceptance that you can’t make new “old” friends. But odds are good they’ll keep trying.
Nan Gatewood Satter’s full-length drama Variations on a Theme in the Key of Dreams was presented at The Stissing Center for Arts and Culture in April 2025. Her one-act comedies Yalu River and Dinner at Donovan’s have been seen at festivals including the William Inge Theatre Festival’s New Play Lab; Silver Spring Stage One-Act Festival; and the Valdez Theatre Conference. Both plays received further development at The Center for the Performing Arts in Rhinebeck, NY. Dinner at Donovan’s was produced in 2024 at the Theatre of Western Springs, in Western Springs, IL, and Yalu River was produced there in 2025. Her play Extreme Relaxation debuted at The Philipstown Depot in June 2026.
John is an award winning actor and veteran of more than 100 episodic and commercial appearances for television. He has appeared at the Road in the role of Doug in the critically acclaimed production of John Is a Father and in the role of Vince in Finding Fossils. He has directed countless productions for the Road’s Summer Playwrights Festival. His most recent exciting accomplishment: appearing as Ward Evans in the Academy Award winning film Oppenheimer. John is a graduate of Education and Theatre Arts from Frostburg State University in Maryland.
