An Interview with Playwright Mike McGeever

1: What is the name of your play?
FRAMEWORKS

2: What was your first job in the theatre?
I played the King in a 3rd grade class production of RUMPELSTILSKIN, complete with a blue bathrobe and a paper crown. Years later the critics are still raving about my performance.

3: Do you ever model characters after real life people?
Yes, nearly everything I write is modeled off people I know, much to the chagrin of my friends. FRAMEWORKS was inspired in part by a subway ride to the University of Chicago, where I walked past the Nuclear Energy Statue, Rockefeller Chapel, a group of graduate students discussing string theory, and a couple in line at the theater who were discussing cosmology, which is what passes for first-date small talk at the University of Chicago. Is the Nuclear Energy statue a commemoration of the first controlled nuclear reaction, a tribute to science and human ingenuity, a work of art, or something greater? Existence itself is a matter of perspective. FRAMEWORKS arranges seemingly incongruous elements into a play, which is itself a type of “framework” for those of you who enjoy ironic titles.

4: As an artist, what subjects tend to draw your interest?
I mostly write comedies, although I’ve written thrillers and dramas as well. Most of my work involves characters discovering their duty to something greater than their own self-interest, which is actually much funnier than it sounds.

5: Do you have other passions aside from playwriting?

I love Chicago’s amazing architecture, American history, and computer science, which like playwriting involves creating something elegant, beautiful, and virtual, entirely out of your own imagination.

6: Are you currently working on any new projects?
I just finished writing THE DEAL, a short play about a former KGB agent who works at a Toyota dealership because “I can’t torture people in America. So I sell cars instead.”

7: Here’s a fun question! What is your favorite dessert?
Just asking this question sent me to my fridge… Okay, I’m back. Cheesecake remains my breakfast of champions, I love chocolate chip cookies, and I’ll eat this survey if you put whipped cream and chocolate sauce on it.

8: Any acknowledgements or words of encouragement?
“In the end there are three things that last: faith, hope, and love. And the greatest of these is love.” Also, “Every island has a Gilligan.” I’ll let you guess which one of these I wrote.

9: Describe your play in 3 words!
Subway + Physics = God
