SPF 13: Speak Lines All Garbled

Saturday, July 9th @ 2:00 PM PST
Written By David Liu
Directed By Jacqueline Misaye

Seated next to each other in this darkened theater, two strangers have watched the first act of the play. Now the lights come up for intermission, and they have fifteen minutes to read the program, to check their phones…or to go off-script and devise their own dialogue. The theatre may bring people together, but the rest is silence up to them.

Development
The play had a workshop with The Garden and readings with Vintage Theatre and Spooky Action Theater.

David S. Liu is a playwright and science administrator. Originally from Maryland, he’s made it all of fifteen miles down the road and now lives in Washington, D.C. This summer Speak Lines All Garbled, his first full-length play, will have staged readings as part of Vintage Theatre’s New Play Festival and The Road Theatre Company’s Summer Playwrights Festival. It has been developed with The Garden and Spooky Action Theatre and was chosen as a finalist for Signature Theatre’s SigWorks New Play Reading Series and Rorschach Theatre’s Magic in Rough Spaces New Play Lab. David’s short plays have been presented by the Apollo Civic Theatre, Nu Sass Productions, and Philly’s Primary Stages. He is a graduate of the University of Maryland School of Medicine and Harvard College.

Jacqueline Misaye is a proud member of the Road Theatre Company, having made her Road debut in At the Table, and, most recently, performing in their filmed production of Steve Yockey’s Reykjavik. David Liu’s beautiful hilarious play inspired her to take up the director gauntlet, and she is grateful to the Road for this opportunity as a part of their Summer Playwrights Festival. This summer she will be touring parks throughout LA and Orange County as Juliet in Shakespeare By the Sea’s Romeo and Juliet. Some previous acting credits include Bliss, Or Emily Post is Dead (Moving Arts), Kentucky (East West Players), Little Women (Playwrights’ Arena) and Irving’s Tiara (Theatre 68). She trained at the British American Drama Academy and the USC School of Dramatic Arts.
