An Interview with Playwright Jerry Lambert

1: What is the name of your play?
Straight Talk.

2: What was your first job in the theatre?
Playing Lester Lettuce in “Revolt of the Vegetables,” a childrens’ play about eating healthy. It was ahead of its time.

3: Do you ever model characters after real life people?
Only rarely.

4: As an artist, what subjects tend to draw your interest?
Usually just the way human beings behave under extraordinary circumstances. I love writing comedy, but sometimes there is such a thin line between the comedic and dramatic.

5: Do you have other passions aside from playwriting?
I love acting, and travel, and I’m a news junkie, which for the last couple of years has been one of the most depressing afflictions anyone can have. And I really love my wife Nadine, who has been my inspiration since 1982, when we were very young and very poor struggling artists in New York City. And I love my dog Betty.

6: Are you currently working on any new projects?
Right now I’m beginning work on a musical about Vladimir Lenin and the Russian revolution. Lenin will be played by Scott Smith.

7: Here’s a fun question! What is your favorite dessert?
Strawberry-rhubarb pie!

8: Any acknowledgements or words of encouragement?
I really appreciate the tremendous work that is being done at the Road, and am blessed to be a part of SPF 9. Many thanks to Scott Smith, director Stewart J Zully and the Road, for giving so many artists a chance to shine this summer.

9: Describe your play in 3 words!
Who’s Your Daddy? (oops that might be four).
