A Man and a Woman have grown so far apart during their long marriage that for years, each has lost track of what the other has been doing; they are completely unaware of each other’s activities and accomplishments. They even communicate as “he” and “she,” rather than “I” and “you”. Instead of dialogue, they talk the stage directions. When their estranged daughter phones to tell them she’s about to have a baby, this shocking, unexpected news restores normal communication and starts to bring them back together.

DEBORAH DASHOW RUTH, a former English teacher and University of California Berkeley Extension administrator, lives with her cat Sheba in Kensington, California, where she writes plays and poetry. A staged reading in San Francisco of “The Way It Was: Five Short Plays About the 50s,” was given in cooperation with the Dramatists Guild. Her short play, “True Colors,” won the McLean Drama Company’s 10-minute play competition in 2012. She has been a member of Will Dunne’s playwriting workshops since 2006. Her poetry has appeared in numerous journals and little magazines; two of her poems were nominated for Pushcart Prizes.
