The Word at The Road
Join us for a reading of Angela J. Davis’ The Spanish Prayer Book on October 8th, 2018 at The Road on Magnolia.
Director: Lee Sankowich
Synopsis: Historical mystery, a moral dilemma, and matters of the heart converge when a committed atheist inherits a collection of beautifully illustrated fourteenth-century Hebrew manuscripts that bear witness to overlapping Jewish and Islamic traditions, and discovers the books were stolen from a library in 1940s Berlin. Inspired by true events and a late twentieth-century court case, and using images from the books themselves, the play explores the allure of sacred objects, the ethical issues generated by cultural treasures displaced during wartime, and the power of art to forge human connections. Recently named one of sixteen finalists (from field of over twelve hundred plays) for the Moss Hart and Kitty Carlisle Hart New Play Initiative, The Spanish Prayer Book was also named the ATHE Award for Playwriting Excellence 2nd Place Winner, Eugene O’Neill semi-finalist, SETC New-Play Award First Alternate Winner, PlayPENN top 12, Julie Harris Award top 5, and Multi-Stages (NYC) final round selection, among several other honors.
